Welcome to Greenstead Grazing – producers of premium certified organic, grass-fed beef from South West Queensland. Founded by Amy and Kenton Peart in 2007, Greenstead Grazing is a family-owned beef enterprise dedicated to bringing together sustainable practices, innovation and genetics to ensure cattle thrive in our natural environment.
Our breeding, fattening and commercial seedstock operation results from generations of sustainable land stewardship and genetic selection for efficient, fertile cattle that perform in a grass-fed production system.
Our seedstock division, Greenstead Genetics, (formerly Rangeland Bulls) supplies Angus composite bulls uniquely bred to drive productivity in commercial, grass-fed beef enterprises.
Breeding Program
Founded by Amy’s parents, Esmae & Steve Taylor, out commercial breeding program has been in place for more than 25 years, selling grass-fed Angus composite bulls (3/4 Angus, 1/4 Brahman) to beef producers across Queensland and northern Australia.
Previously marketed as part of the Rangeland Bulls breeding collective, our seedstock arm is now known as Greenstead Genetics. However, the breeding philosophy and integrity that underpinned Rangeland Bulls remains unchanged.
Breeding Objectives
Temperament.
No artificial inputs.
- The entire herd is grass fed, organic.
Fertility.
- Selection pressure across the herd means every female must calve unassisted by 2 years of age and continue to wean a calf every 12 months, within a 60-day joining.
Polled.
Intense bull selection.
- Only top 5 % of male calves selected as bulls for continued genetic gain.
Early puberty.
- Selection for scrotal size at weaning and one year old. Bulls must have reached puberty by one year old. Research shows scrotal size needs to be evaluated in terms of ‘how big and how soon’ ie. when you want your heifers cycling.
- Bred in tough environmental conditions to perform with no artificial inputs.
- View bulls in their ‘working clothes’ to select animals that can perform in a grass-fed environment.
- Selection traits based around fertility and growth patterns to meet organic, MSA market specifications, off grass.
Uniquely Commercial Bulls. Our role as beef producers gives Greenstead Genetics a genuine point of difference as seedstock suppliers. This approach reflects a shift in focus from chasing maximum outputs to aligning breeding priorities to the real profit drivers in commercial herds. Our focus remains squarely on commercial values and the discipline we apply to our breeder herd of 2500 females is testament to this. The compounding effect of long-term breeder selection pressure has achieved fertile, efficient, low maintenance cows that thrive with minimal intervention.
Our intention has always been to breed the bulls we want to use in our own beef business with the enduring goal of optimising net profit per hectare in a commercial environment. So, we are entirely invested in the breeding direction and cow herd discipline to achieve this. Bulls are presented for sale in grass-fed condition, helping buyers make a more reliable assessment of how they will perform in the paddock when they get home, with a rumen ready to eat the same pastures as the cows.
Greenstead Genetics maintain our practice of only keeping females which produce a calf unassisted by two years of age and continue to do this annually within a two-month joining period. Only the top 5% of male calves make it as bulls and they must have reached puberty by 12 months of age with a scrotal measurement of 28cm plus, off grass. We only offer bulls for sale we would be satisfied to use in our own herd.
